Telnet

Telnet is a program that runs on your computer and allows you to connect to a server. As an emulation program, the commands you enter through telnet are executed as if you were typing them directly into the server's keyboard (just like when you remote control your TV). To prevent unauthorized people from fiddling (to put it mildly) with server data, only folks with a valid username and password get to remotely control servers.
