Standards, Specifications

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is responsible for setting and maintaining the Web's universal standards and common protocols. Imagine if every town had a different set of meanings associated with its traffic signs and signals: Out-of-towners would be demolition-derbied the second they crossed the city line. Similarly, without W3C standards giving the Web its uniformity, the whole thing would crumble into chaos.

Specifications, or "specs," are the technical low-down and nitty-gritty on a product, either software or hardware.
