Netiquette

When it comes to human interaction, there are certain rules that must be followed to make sure "we all just get along." A handshake is a nice way to make contact with a new acquaintance. Licking your finger and shoving it in their ear while screaming "Wet Willy!" is perhaps not so nice. Online communication - in newsgroups, email, and chat rooms - has its own set of dos and don'ts. Some rules of thumb: Typing in all capital letters is equivalent to SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS, spittle flying, eyes a-rolling. Ask yourself if that's really your intention. And before you fire off that deliciously subtle demonstration of your dry sarcastic wit, consider whether it's possible your reader might miss the joke entirely - yes, adding a smiley could overwhelm your delicate prose with cheerleaderish perkiness, but it might just save a cyber-friendship.
