Modem

Most people get online with a good ol' phone and modem (here's an impress-your-friends fact: Modem is a combo of MOdulator and DEModulator, which refers to the process of translating that baby-bird screaming you hear upon hook-up into something that your computer can understand). Most computers sold these days come with a 28.8 Kbps modem (you can also get a slightly faster 33.6, or double the speed with a 56.6) - use anything slower, and viewing the Web (with all its bottle-necking images, sound files, and video) is nothing short of excruciating.
