JPEG
Image files, in their natural scanned state, can easily eat up
multiple megabytes of memory. Since no one is willing to wait three
hours for a picture of Kitty's first birthday to download, you have
to optimize images for Web use. Limit the number of colors and lower
the resolution (anything sharper than 72 DPI - dots per inch - is
wasted since that's the best monitors can produce) by compressing
the image into one of two formats: either GIF or JPEG. Though they
tend to be a bit larger, memory-wise, JPEGs (as in Joint Photographic
Experts Group) deal with the blending and fading of photos a shade
better than GIFs, creating images sharp enough to warrant a few
extra seconds of download time.
