Hacker, Cracker

In a broad, non-techie environment, the term "hacker" is used to describe any computer over-enthusiast, or a criminal who hacks in (gains unauthorized access) to computer systems to steal or destroy data. And "cracker" is a derogatory term for something else entirely. However, programmers use the term "cracker" to describe those illegal-entry criminals, and reserve the term "hacker" to describe an amateur or self-trained programmer (depending on circumstance, this moniker can be used either as a compliment or cut down).
