Chat, Chat Room

A chat room is an online space (everything from 2-D text-based pages to 3-D virtual reality worlds) where two or more people can "meet" and frantically type real-time messages to and fro. To keep conversation focused, chat rooms are often limited to a theme, for instance ... chocodiles. Anyone with an Internet connection, the proper chatting software, and a burning need to talk about creamy filling can join in the fun. At their best, chat rooms allow folks to meet and socialize with people from all around the world (some have forged life-long friendships, even met future spouses online). At their worst, chat rooms are crowded, confusing, angry conflict meccas where people drunk on anonymity let fly with whatever anti-social thought comes to their busy, typo-generating fingers.
